James and Peter Rossouw established JKA karate in the Free State in 1966. Giel van Tonder, area head of Northern Free State, is the only remaining karateka from that era. He took over in 1968 and in 1979 when Northern Free State separated Corrie Schoeman, Piet le Roux and Pierre Lubbe took over the reins. Pierre and Corrie resigned in 1985.

More than 110 karateka from the Free State JKA were awarded Black Belt.

All Japan Championships, Tokio, Japan 1992:

In the best performance by a South African club team the Free State JKA mens kumite team was awarded bronze medals for third place.
The team was: Ian le Roux, Ronny Webber, Gordon Royffe, Gideon van Eeden, Jaco Hanekom, Andries de Kock.

JKA World Championships, Tokio, Japan 1992: Cristelle Cauvin was awarded a certificate as one of only two non-Japanese to reach the quater-finals in the Ladies Individual Kumite.

1996: P.C. Ploos van Amstel become u.21 World Champion in kata (kanku-sho).

Cedric de Sousa and Thabiso Booi was members of the team that won the u.21 kumite title at the World Championships.

The first Ladies team selected in 1979 was Sandra, Shirlee and Ann Lindsay-Smith of Southern Transvaal.
